If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know I’m all about some self-care! If you’re new- Hi! I’m Alison, and I NEED, CRAVE, DESIRE self-care to keep my sanity.
Being a mommy to three little crazies, working on an (accelerated) master’s degree, and being in single-mom-mode more often than I’d like pretty much requires self-care the millisecond an opportunity arises. (If didn’t indulge, I’d probably be locked up in a looney bin)!
With that being said, I wanted to share a few of my absolute favorite at-home items I utilize to relax and recharge. These items are great investments because, believe me, you’ll be using them over and over and over, again!
Second to working out, taking a bath is my favorite alone time activity. To set the mood, I’ll light a few candles, perhaps play some soft music, pour a glass of some kombucha, and if I’m really on the edge, I might even lock the door to keep the entire family out.
Then the second I step in and feel the warmth of the water around me, I completely loosen up and forget my worries. However, the last year or so I’ve taken it to a new level by including epsom salt.
Epsom salt baths are known to have a TON of health benefits. The breakdown of magnesium and sulfate can ease sore muscles, relieve migraines, detoxify the body, exfoliate the skin, and most importantly (to me)- reduce stress. So to that, I say, why wouldn’t you want to include these powerful little crystals in your personal bath sanctuary?
Gimme ALL the books!
I’ve had a Kindle for years, but my husband recently upgraded me to the Kindle Fire, and oh my! I LOVE IT!
First-of-all, being able to have all the books I’ve read and want to read right there in my hand rocks! Second, being able to access all my favorite phone apps and the internet rocks! Lastly, being able to do all of that in a dark room next to the hubs without blinding him with the background light rocks!
For the price, the features really are amazing! Sure, I’d love to indulge in an iPad, but this little Fire has everything I need to join me everywhere I go.
Journal into a happy state.
Journaling has always been a go-to for me to release stored up emotions. However, sometimes when I write on my own accord, I get hung up in the negative zone. So I decided to seek out a journal that would help keep my mind on the positive track, and this Happy Journal is doing the trick!
Each day provides a quick, positive prompt, such as “View your life in KINDSIGHT. Instead of slapping your forehead and asking, ‘What was I thinking?’ pause and ask the kinder question: ‘What was I learning?'” Take five or ten minutes to respond, and BOOM! You’ve just aided yourself in a positive mind-set for the day.

Tight muscles and a tight budget? No prob! Bring the masseuse to you!
Who doesn’t love a massage?? If I had all the money (and time) in the world, I would treat myself to a massage at least twice *cough, everyday* per week. But since money and time are not in my favor at this point in my life, my husband decided to bring the masseuse to me this last Christmas.
Enter this cordless massager made by the awesome Brookstone. This fabulous gadget can be brought anywhere, and surprisingly hits all the sweet spots just right! Plus, it has a heat setting to really loosen up those muscles that are feeling oh-so-tight!
**Side-note** My mother-in-law who is a masseuse recently tried it when she came to visit, and she was very impressed with this bad boy! That says a lot, to me!
Stick it to stress!
Somewhere along the way, I was introduced to this this weird-looking mat and pillow, and let me tell you! It is PURE MAGIC!
Without fail, every time I use it I fall into this peaceful power-nap state. When I awake, I feel loose, light, and ultra-relaxed. Although those spikes don’t seem like anything you’d want to lay on, it is well worth the initial discomfort. Even my kids love laying on it! (Although it does not appear to calm their little fannies down).
A couple of years ago I learned about taking Kava for anxiety. I immediately went out and purchased some in pill form in hopes that it might be the natural remedy I was seeking to calm my nerves. However, when I saw it in the store as a tea (WAAYYY cheaper than the pills), I was elated! Seriously, one cup, and I’m a whole new, relaxed woman. It’s a great way to end the day, too.
**Side-note** My husband was looking to calm himself down one night (he was home solo with the kids), so I suggested the tea. He’s a skeptic, but was totally convinced once he noticed he was indeed much calmer after the tea.
