The other morning I went to the dentist for my bi-annual cleaning, and the hygienist enthusiastically asked me if I had any New Year’s resolutions. If she wasn’t simultaneously scraping, spraying, and sucking junk out of my mouth, I would’ve attempted to answer. However, I just shook my head.
Honestly, even if I could’ve answered, I’m not sure what I would’ve said. What are my resolutions for 2018?
2017 was a pretty amazing year for personal growth. (Sobriety will kind of force that upon you). So what do I want to do about 2018? Surely there is a dream or two I want to pursue? Surely there are some goals to crush?
And ya know what? It hit me! Now that I’ve got this whole sobriety thing on lock, I am SO ready to tackle new grounds of life! I’m open to challenges and growth like never before! That’s because 2017 taught me that I can conquer some fudging hard things!
So today I sat down in my favorite cozy chair and was overcome with diarrhea of the pencil. I wrote down mental, physical, social, financial, personal, and spiritual goals. I pondered the hurdles and how I might overcome each of them. I set both long-term and daily aspirations. And I reminded myself at the end of the day that it’s beyond OK if I only accomplish one of the many because one is better than none!
However, as a way to hold myself slightly accountable (because my planner is not the greatest cheerleader or accountability partner), I’ve decided to share with you just a few of my dreams, goals, and intentions for 2018. If you would like to serve as an accountable partner because you share the same dreams, give me a shout! We’ll root each other on and make 2018 our best year, yet!
Mentally I’d like to…
*Slow down more and practice staying more present
*Embrace the feeling of boredom (because then I’ll know I’m doing the whole slowing down thing right)
*Seek out positive thoughts in negative or anxious situations
Spiritually I’d like to…
*Give God the first 10 minutes of my morning. (Yes, even before coffee).
*Learn the art and power of meditation
Physically I’d like to…
*Build more lean muscle
*Run more often and eventually sign up for a 5 or 10K
*Incorporate more yoga and stretching into my weekly workouts
Financially I’d like to…
*Put a bigger dent in my student loans
*Spend less on me and more on others in need
Professionally I’d like to…
*Complete my second masters degree in Exercise Science
*Get certified as a NASM personal trainer
*Substitute teach a few times a month to stay current with students
Socially I’d like to…
*Get out more with my girlfriends
*Commit to more fitness group meetups
*Get more involved at church
*Attend the She Recovers (local-ish) events in February and September
Personally I’d like to…
*Wife better by shifting my approach (as suggested by this AMAZING book I’m reading… I’ll share in a later post)
*Connect more with my kids and volunteer more at their schools
*Increase self-care and decrease guilt
*Read at least 25 books
*(Finally) learn how to use my digital camera (I’ve had it for five years… eek!)
*SIMPLIFY my office space, closet, etc.
*Keep growing this little blog of mine and reach new levels of sharing the hope of recovery
Gosh, I think I could go on forever, as I’m just so dang excited for another fresh start, another year of truly living! (I doubt the dental hygienist could’ve handled hearing this whole list)! But I’ll put a cap on it for now.
What’s on YOUR list? What is making you giddy inside when you think of 2018? Would love to know!
Happiest of New Years, everyone! Sincerely wish you only the best in this beautiful world!
